California Workers’ Compensation Resources

Links to the agencies in charge of workplace safety and California workers’ comp claims, denials and appeals

• Division of Workers’ Compensation – The DWC is the agency in charge of administering workers’ compensation claims and is in charge of utilization reviews, independent medical reviews, qualified medical evaluators, and more. Information for the injured worker can be found here, and you can also get answers to frequently asked questions about workers’ compensation.

• Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board – If you disagree with a decision made by a workers’ comp administrative law judge in your case, you can petition the WCAB for reconsideration.

• Permanent Disability Rating Schedule – Once your medical condition becomes “permanent and stationary” or you’ve reached “maximum medical improvement,” this guide will be used to calculate a permanent disability rating which affects how long you can receive workers’ comp.

• California Labor and Workforce Development Agency – All of the major agencies regulating worker safety, including the DWC and Cal/OSHA, are run out of this agency.

• Employment Development Department – Are you eligible for disability benefits? Find information here about eligibility, calculating benefits, and the DI claim process.

• California Department of Industrial Relations – Go here to report unsafe conditions at work. Your name will be kept confidential by law.

• Occupational Safety and Health Administration – This agency publishes workplace safety standards for the construction industry and other occupations and also investigates complaints of unsafe workplaces. • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – The NHTSA is a U.S. government agency dedicated to traffic safety. Find information here on distracted driving, drunk driving, vehicle safety recalls, and more.

• AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety – This not-for-profit conducts research into traffic safety and shares information about safe driving for seniors, teens and other vulnerable road users.

• Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration – The FMCSA regulates the commercial trucking industry and publishes regulations regarding maximum hours of service for truck drivers, semi-truck size and weight limits, and other factors related to preventing truck accidents and crashes.

• American Motorcyclist Association – Find riding tips here to have fun rides and prevent motorcycle accidents. Visit the state laws database to learn more about California motorcycle laws.

• Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center – The PBIC aims to improve safe walking and bicycling in local communities. You’ll find statistics and discussion guides here, along with other tools and resources. For bicycle resources specific to California, visit this page at the California DMV.

• California Department of Motor Vehicles – The DMV provides important information about auto liability insurance requirements. You can also use this website to find a DMV driver safety office, get a salvage certificate for a vehicle, or request your driving record.

• California Department of Transportation – At the CalTrans website, you can submit a claim for personal property damage caused by the agency, report a traffic issue or pothole or submit a request for maintenance.

• Consumer Product Safety Commission – Stay on top of the latest product safety recalls of consumer goods. For a more comprehensive list of recalls covering consumer products, motor vehicles, boats, food, medicine and cosmetics, visit www.recalls.gov.

• Brain Injury Association of America – If you or a family member suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in an accident, this website can help you understand the implications of TBI and find resources in your area.

• State Bar of California – Go here to download the consumer pamphlet What Should I Know if I am Arrested? This guide explains your rights to remain silent and have an attorney and explains crucial steps in the arrest process such as the arraignment and preliminary hearing. You’ll also find important information about searches and arrests with or without a warrant.

• Superior Court of Los Angeles County – This court handles criminal cases involving misdemeanors, felonies and infractions in LA. Visit the criminal division section of the website to search for a case or learn important legal terms and rules for appearing in court.
